Program Description 

The Renew­able Ener­gy Tech­nolo­gies Cer­tifi­cate aims to fill the short­age for knowl­edge­able and skilled pro­fes­sion­als for the grow­ing sec­tor of clean energy. 

One of the fastest-grow­ing in the world, the renew­able ener­gy sec­tor employed 12.7 mil­lion work­ers world­wide in 2021. In Cana­da, accord­ing to Clean Energy’s 2021 report, the cur­rent work­force in the sec­tor sits at 430,500 peo­ple, a num­ber pro­ject­ed to grow almost 50% to 639,200 by 2030. Alber­ta, how­ev­er, is the province poised to see the most impres­sive growth, with jobs set to increase a huge 164% over the next decade.

This pro­gram will be of spe­cial inter­est to those who want to devel­op, man­age, or improve their under­stand­ing of the rapid­ly evolv­ing clean ener­gy sec­tor. This includes, among oth­ers, envi­ron­men­tal pro­fes­sion­als, project man­agers, indus­try exec­u­tives, devel­op­ers, and investors inter­est­ed in expand­ing their career or busi­ness with renew­able energy.

What will I receive?

Upon completion of all program requirements, you will receive a Renewable Energy Technologies Certificate

Cost 

  • The approximate cost of this Certificate is $4515 CAD
  • Course Fees range from $445 to $995 CAD
  • Pay as you go - students pay on a course-by-course basis as they register. You do not need to pay the entire program fee at once
  • An application fee of $100 is required for admis­sion into the program
  • Cours­es are GST-exempt
  • Consider applying for the Cana­da-Alber­ta Job Grant

Program Details

  • This program is comprised of seven courses -  laddering three series (Renewable Energy Essentials, Solar Energy Development and Design, Wind Energy Development and Design) and two additional courses into a certificate. Courses range from 14-42 hours in length, for a total of 168 instructional hours
  • This program is designed for part-time study and can generally be completed within one year
  • For students who are new to Renewable Energy Technologies, it is recommended to complete EXERM 4310: Introduction to Electricity and Power Generation first. Once EXERM 4310 has been completed, it is suggested to take the courses in the following order: EXERM 4311, EXERM 4312, EXERM 4287, EXERM 4294, EXERM 4303, EXERM 4304
  • Students have the flexibility to schedule courses around their availability. Typically students complete 1-3 courses per semester based on the course length
  • Courses are graded with assessments. This might include quizzes, exams, discussion forums, assignments, papers, and presentations.

  • Individual courses are open for general studies and may be completed without being admitted into a program
  • Programs change occasionally, so we recommend applying for admission early. Once admitted, your requirements to complete the program are locked in. You can be confident that completed and eligible courses will continue to apply to your program.
     

How to Apply for your Credential

  • Students can verify their program requirements and progress by logging into the University of Alberta’s student portal, Bear Tracks, to view their Academic Requirements
  • A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 is required to graduate
  • To qualify for program completion, you must submit a request to obtain your credential

International Students

  • International Students are welcome to enroll in our courses, with the only requirement being a stable internet connection. There are no differential course fees for international students completing courses in this program
  • Students are responsible for ensuring that they are proficient in English so that they can fully participate in classes
  • Please note that non-credit programming does not qualify for a study permit, therefore this program cannot be used for immigration to Canada. Foreign nationals authorized to work in Canada who are prohibited from engaging in studies as a condition of their work permit are allowed to engage in distance learning courses.
