The Occupational Health and Safety Certificate is a cornerstone for safety in Alberta and a key part of your long and rewarding career in OHS.

What You'll Earn

- Flexible payment – pay course-by-course as you go
- Courses are GST-exempt.
- Some courses may require additional resources, such as textbooks
- This program is comprised of eight core courses, one elective, and 42 hours of enrichment seminars. Most courses are 39 hours, one is 21 hours, and seminars range from 14–21 hours, for a total of 312 instructional hours.
- It’s designed for part-time study and can generally be completed within one to two years. You have up to six years to complete the program.
- You have the flexibility to schedule courses around your availability. Most students complete 1–3 courses per semester.
- If you’re new to Occupational Health and Safety, EXOS 4620: Introduction to Health and Safety is recommended as the first course. There’s no specific order recommended for the remaining courses. They can be taken at any time as long as you’ve completed their prerequisites.
- Grading is through assessments, which might include quizzes, exams, discussion forums, papers, and presentations.
- It’s a flexible online experience, with courses offered asynchronously. More info about online delivery formats can be found here.
- Course materials are shared in CE Canvas. Some courses may require additional resources, such as textbooks.

- After you successfully complete your program requirements, you’ll receive an email letting you know when your certificate is ready. If you have any questions about your credentials, please contact the program office. Once you receive your certificate, you’ll also be eligible to become a UAlberta Associate Alumni.
- The OHS Certificate program meets the formal educational requirements for the CRST certification from the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals – view our equivalencies chart.
- Courses qualify for the continuous professional development requirements of AMHSA, APEGA, BCRSP, CPHR, CRBOH, MHSA, and CSSE.
- Industry Training Recognition – If you’ve obtained any one of the below designations within the past five years, you’re encouraged to apply for transfer credit and receive 21 hours toward the 42 hours of the “Enrichment Seminar” requirement of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Certificate program:
- CHSC (Certified Health & Safety Consultant), offered through the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering
- NCSO (National Construction Safety Officer) and HSA (Health and Safety Administrator), both offered through the Alberta Construction Safety Association
- MSO (Manufacturing Safety Officer), offered through the Manufacturers’ Health and Safety Association
- QHSO (Qualified Health and Safety Officer), offered through the Alberta Association for Safety Partnerships; maintenance requirements are as per the program
- RMHSA (Recognized Municipal Health and Safety Advisor), offered through the Alberta Municipal Health and Safety Association

- Proficiency in English and a stable internet connection are needed to participate and succeed in our courses.
