The Team-Based Collaborative Care (TBCC) Certificate is a non-credit micro-credential designed to enhance teamwork, communication, and interprofessional collaboration in healthcare. Delivered through a hybrid model of self-paced online learning and hands-on simulation, this program equips healthcare professionals with the skills to build high-functioning teams, navigate real-world scenarios, and improve patient outcomes. Participants gain practical experience in safe, immersive settings, fostering confidence and competency in delivering patient-centred care. What You Will Receive
Upon successful completion of the Team-Based Collaborative Care Certificate, you will earn a recognized micro-credential from the University of Alberta's College of Health Sciences through a digital certificate, demonstrating your expertise in team-based collaborative care.
The certificate begins with a fully asynchronous foundational course, introducing key concepts, content, and skills that will be applied in later courses. The remaining courses combine self-paced online learning with in-person simulation training, equipping you with practical skills to enhance teamwork, communication, and patient-centered care. Participants receive a digital certificate upon completion, which can be used to showcase their expertise in collaborative healthcare settings.
Cost
- Total Program Fee: CAD $1,000 - $1,100 (Varies based on elective choices)
- Foundations of Team-Based Care & Caregiver-Centered Care: CAD $200 per course
- All Other Courses: CAD $300 per course
- Pay-As-You-Go: Register and pay per course—no need to pay the full program fee upfront
- No textbooks are required. All materials are shared with students through an online learning platform.
Program Details
- This program consists of several courses, and currently, two of these courses - Foundations of Team-Based Collaborative Care and Holistic Patient-Centred Care: Partnering with Caregivers - are being offered. We are excited to announce that the full program, including additional courses, will be available in the near future. We are in the final stages of finalizing the program details, so please stay tuned for updates on additional course offerings, enrollment information, and launch dates.
- Mandatory Course: The fully asynchronous, 10-hour “Foundations of Team-Based Collaborative Care” course provides foundational knowledge of team-based care competencies.
- Elective Courses: Three courses (~12 hours each), chosen from eight specialized topics, including Caregiver-Centered Care, Systems Thinking, Empathy in Caring, and more.
- Assessment-Based Completion: Grading is based on knowledge checks and participation in Simulations rather than traditional exams.
- Hybrid Learning Model: The program combines self-paced online modules (6-8 hours per course) with in-person simulation training (up to 4 hours per course) at the Health Sciences Education & Research Commons (HSERC), University of Alberta, Edmonton, offering a realistic healthcare simulation environment with expert-led practice.

Funding and Scholarships
This program currently does not include funding or scholarship opportunities. Please check with your local regulatory authorities.
International Students
- International Students are welcome to enroll and pay the same course fees as local students.
- Proficiency in English and a stable internet connection are needed to fully participate in classes. Simulation components must be completed in person.
- Please note that non-credit programming does not qualify for a study permit, therefore this program cannot be used for immigration to Canada. Foreign nationals authorized to work in Canada who are prohibited from engaging in studies as a condition of their work permit are allowed to engage in distance learning courses.
