Program Description
The Executive Certificate in Municipal Leadership program develops municipal leaders by increasing their capacity to lead people, teams, departments and organizations. Participants in this program will learn to shift their focus from day-to-day tasks to strategically achieving the organization's business goals while managing change and stakeholder expectations through effective leadership. Throughout the program's duration, participants will form long-lasting networks with like-minded leaders within the municipal environment.

Who It’s Good For

- 🗸 Individuals facing competing priorities and want to learn how to make more informed decisions that benefit all stakeholders.
- 🗸 This course is for public administration professionals, not suitable for elected officials.
What You Will Receive
- 🗸 Upon completion of the ECML program, participants will receive a Certificate.
- 🗸 To receive a passing grade for each module, participants are required to attend the session (either in person or online) and complete the Reflective Learning Journal. Each submission of the Reflective Learning Journal will be graded on a pass/fail basis.
- Fees per course range between $1,250 CAD to $1,850 CAD
- Pay as you go: You can pay course-by-course as you register. You don’t need to pay the entire program fee at once.
- No textbooks are required (all materials are available digitally).
- It’s designed for part-time study and must be completed within 2 years.
- Courses don’t have to be completed in any specific order, so you can choose the courses that best fit your schedule; however, it is recommended that you complete the core courses in order.
- Grading is on a pass/fail basis, with attendance and submission of the Reflective Learning Journal as part of the required criteria.
- The program’s core courses are online, with the exception of the last core course being an in-person Summit in Canmore, AB.
This program currently does not include funding or scholarship opportunities.
- To receive your Executive Certificate in Municipal Leadership, participants need to complete and receive a “pass” in the core courses.
- After you successfully complete your program requirements, you'll receive an email letting you know when your certificate is ready. If you have any questions about your credentials, please contact the program office. Once you receive your certificate, you'll also be eligible to become a UAlberta Associate Alumni.
- These courses are not transferable.
- This program is not available to international students.

Participants are required to complete all five core courses to earn the Executive Certificate in Municipal Leadership.
While it is strongly recommended that courses be taken in the sequence listed, participants may complete the courses in any order unless otherwise specified. All program requirements must be completed within two years of admission. Courses may also be taken individually
