Course Description

Provides an introduction to the provincial and federal laws that affect municipalities. Topics addressed include the election and operation of council; drafting, enacting and enforcing bylaws; reasons for bylaw validity, municipal contracts and tendering, and municipal liability.

Who Should Take This Course?

Aimed at individuals interested in moving into higher level responsibilities in the local government field; our student body includes municipal government employees in planning, corporate services, economic development, operations, finance, and more.

Learner Outcomes

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • Become familiar with municipal law principles and Canadian municipal legislation.
  • Analyze and apply municipal legislation and concepts to specific factual situations in the municipal context.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of municipal legislation in achieving municipal purposes.
  • Synthesize municipal legal theory with practical application of municipal legislation and principles.
