Course Description

Through examining practical construction considerations, this course emphasizes critical path planning and scheduling methods. Topics will include network diagrams, time/resource/cost interrelationships, selection of crew, method and equipment, schedule monitoring, group planning techniques and monitoring, updating, and progress reporting.

Aimed at a wide range of construction workers, including tradesmen and journeymen, managers and supervisors, administrators, contractors, consultants, architects, and construction business owners.

Learner Outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to: Identify and explain the roles and responsibilities outlined on the construction project organization chart. Present and practice the manual diagramming and calculation technique of the Critical Path Method (CPM). Demonstrate the Critical Path Method as a group planning technique. Present and practice methods of planning project resource budgets within project time constraints. Utilize Network Diagrams for time & task scheduling. Present and practice methods of monitoring and updating project time plans and resource budgets. Apply manual CPM time and resource planning methods to an example of construction project. Demonstrate the calculation methods and describe the terminology used by CPM-based software products (Excel, Microsoft, etc.).

Comprehensive content that covers topics such as cost, time management, resources, and industry best practices within construction project coordination and management. Varied class dynamics, with learning facilitated through lectures, group projects, case studies, and assignments. Learning materials available through eClass, the University of Alberta’s eLearning management tool. This course includes computer-based activities (you’ll use Excel, and Microsoft Project will be demonstrated in class). Our learning spaces are Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) enabled, with wifi available to students and numerous USB/electrical outlets distributed throughout common areas outside the classrooms.
