Course Description

An intensive course designed to assist students whose first language is not English in attaining the academic and communication skills necessary for them to become effective, independent participants in graduate studies at an English -language university. Course content is interdisciplinary and focuses on acquiring a practical understanding of and proficiency in approaches to critical thinking, research methodologies, and presentation skills. The course also allows for cultural reflection, facilitating the transitional process, and helping international graduate students to succeed in a North American university setting. Students should have completed EAP 140 or have a minimum score of 69 TOEFL iBT or 6.0 IELTS.

Who Should Take This Course?

This course supports international students entering graduate studies at the University of Alberta. 

Entry requirements for this course:

  • 🗸 Completion of an undergraduate degree
  • 🗸 Completion of EAP 136 (EXELP 7155) OR achieving one of the following language scores:
    • IELTS Academic score of 6.0
    • TOEFL iBT score of 69
    • Duolingo English Test score of 100 with no band score below 95
  • 🗸 Note: Eligible candidates may be requested to complete an additional assessment

  • 🗸Students enrolled in EXELP 7550A will be automatically enrolled in EXELP 7550B.
  • 🗸EXELP 7550A & EXELP 7550B are offered in the Spring & Summer term only.

Recommendations

Coursework assignments and assessments reflect the demands of graduate level study. Students will use articles from their own field of study to complete assignments. Completion of EAP 550 fulfills the English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirement for many of UAlberta's most popular graduate programs.
