Course Description

This learning series focuses on the safe and appropriate usage of diagnostic imaging for the management of common musculoskeletal conditions seen in primary care settings. This module focuses on the clinical decision-making skills to make appropriate referrals and utilization diagnostic imaging for musculoskeletal disorders of the cervical spine, shoulder, elbow, wrist and the hand. It discusses how to determine if imaging is indicated and how to select the most appropriate imaging modality when imaging is indicated.

Learner Outcomes

  1. Describe the basic indications, risk, and clinical benefits of diagnostic imaging for selected conditions of the cervical spine, shoulder, elbow, forearm, wrist, and hand.
  2. Describe the basic imaging protocols for conventional radiology, CT Scan, MRI and diagnostic ultrasound for selected musculoskeletal disorders of the cervical spine, shoulder, elbow, forearm, wrist, and hand.
  3. Describe the basic imaging protocols for conventional radiology, CT Scan, MRI and diagnostic ultrasound for selected traumatic injuries of cervical spine, shoulder, elbow, forearm, wrist, and hand.
  4. Access and use clinical-decision support tools to assist in making appropriate decisions about the use of diagnostic imaging for musculoskeletal disorders of the cervical spine, shoulder, elbow, forearm, wrist, and hand.
