Course Description

Laws governing health information privacy, access, and management have an impact on health care providers, public bodies with a role in the health care sector, employers, professional regulatory bodies, fundraisers, insurers, and researchers. Learn about policies, practices, laws, and regulations that address confidentiality, privacy, and security information. Health Information Protection, addressing Electronic Health Records, E-Health and Telehealth, Health Research, Surveillance, and Public Health and Information Protection issues will also be examined. Prerequisite: EXIAPP 8171

Aimed at individuals interested in pursuing a career in access and privacy, and professionals in a wide range of areas, such as federal, provincial, and municipal government employees; human resources professionals; lawyers and legal professionals; publicity and marketing staff; and records management professionals.

Learner Outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to: Understand the laws governing health information privacy and how they impact health care providers, public bodies with a role in the health care sector, employees/employers, professional regulatory bodies, fundraising, insurers, and researchers. Be knowledgeable about policies, practices, laws, and regulations that address confidentiality, privacy, and security of health information. Explore topics such as health research, surveillance, public health, and information protection issues.

Notes

Fully online asynchronous course, accessible through eClass, the University of Alberta’s eLearning management tool. This course is composed of six modules; each module is guided by an expert instructor over a two-week period. Assessment activities include a mid-term exam, an academic paper, and a final written piece where students summarize what they have learned. All learning materials are provided through eClass at no additional cost. This is an elective course for the IAPP Certificate.
