Course Description

Discuss the fundamental concept of consent for the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information. Learn about key aspects of the Canadian legislative framework for personal information data and security, both for the public (The Privacy Act) and the private sector (The Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act). Get an overview of the various provincial and territorial privacy acts, to illustrate the variety of approaches adopted to address personal information data and security.

Who Should Take This Course?

This course would be of inter­est to gov­ern­ment employ­ees (fed­er­al, provin­cial, and munic­i­pal), gov­ern­ment agen­cies, pri­vate sec­tor employ­ees, and any­one who wants to learn about the core issues relat­ed to pri­va­cy and data secu­ri­ty.

Fully online asynchronous course, accessible through eClass, the University of Alberta’s eLearning management tool. All learning materials are provided through eClass at no additional cost. This is an elective course for the IAPP Certificate. It is also one of three courses required for the Microcredential in Data Privacy and Security.
