Course Description

This course will introduce students to statistics and data management, through a Health and Safety professional's perspective. The focus of the course includes an introduction to basic units of measure, statistical analysis, and how to present and interpret data visually. Topics include: basic arithmetic and algebraic operations; units of measurement, basic statistical measures; probability, sampling distribution and confidence levels; examples of performance measures; and data display and reporting. The course includes specific and practical examples of how each topic may be applied to occupational health and safety management.

Aimed at entry-level and practicing health and safety coordinators, professionals, officers, technicians, supervisors, trainers, management, and administrators.

Learner Outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to: Describe health and safety metrics and how to measure them. Classify types of data. Measure central tendency and variability in a dataset. Use probability, distribution, and correlation for analysis of safety data. Compare safety data collection methods. Select the best type of chart to use with different data. Describe the role of predictive analytics for safety management

Notes

Offered fully online learning - synchronous format. While there are no prerequisites for this course, prior completion of Introduction to Health and Safety Systems (EXOS 4620) and/or Management of Health and Safety Systems (EXOS 4621) is recommended for student success. Although not a requirement for successfully completing the course, students are encouraged to use Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets to practice activities and complete assignments. Pre-and post-class activities are required as part of this course. Pre-class instructions and materials are available on eClass prior to the course start date; advanced registration is advised.
