Course Description

Gain an understanding of residential interior design theories, processes, and styles through a balance of the aesthetic and the technical. Learn basic design elements and principles, client needs assessment, articulation of the design process, identification of domestic styles, career options, scope of practice, and the role of consultants.

Learner Outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • Have researched the various levels of practice, scopes of work, and the respective responsibilities, liabilities, and accreditations within the field of interior design. It is understood that interior decorating is one component of interior design.
  • Be cognisant that design is a decision-making process that involves analysis, synthesis, creativity; that design is a process that benefits from cooperation, constructive approaches, and clear communication.
  • Be aware of and/or recognize the elements and principles of design within residential interiors.
  • Respect and appreciate the technical skills required to become competent in the field of interior design—(manual) drafting, visual presentation, and 3-D rendering techniques.
  • Have experienced professional and peer critiquing and recognize its value in the context of your learning good decorating and design.
  • Have exercised their abilities through various assignments, activities, and discussions.
  • Have learned about the styles (including popularized ‘styles’) and aesthetics of interior design, decorating, and art from a historical perspective.
