EXCPE 4281 - Applied Soil Physics
Course Description
Examine basic physical composition and processes of both the solid and liquid phases of soil. This includes how water is held by soil, how water moves through soil and the linkage between soil water regime and processes within the hydrologic cycle, with emphasis on water infiltration and redistribution. Other topics include soil thermal and aeration properties and processes, impact of spatial variability and soil mechanics. The course will explore applied soil management challenges involving the use of soil physics to address agronomic, environmental and reclamation objectives.Who Should Take This Course?
Aimed at individuals transitioning into the environmental field, as well as mid-level professionals in sectors involving environmental aspects, this course will also be of value to agrologists, biologists, engineers, industrial managers, foresters, technologists, and others who wish to update their skills and knowledge in this area.Notes
This class has online synchronous lectures. Students will require a computer with both audio input and output (such as a microphone-equipped headset). Lecture-based course with group work, case study review, and calculation demonstrations. A variety of assignments allows students to work with SI units, soil physical properties, soil physical parameters, functional inter-relationships, calculations of soil water potentials, soil water movement, and water balances.Recognized by the Alberta Institute of Agrologists (AIA) as a senior agrology course related to entrance into the profession and to augment core knowledge requirements related to a practice area. May be recognized as educational or continuing professional development credits by ECO Canada, the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA), the Association of Alberta Forest Management Professionals (AAFMP), and the Association of Science & Engineering Technology Professionals Of Alberta (ASET).
A textbook is required. Additional learning resources are available through eClass, the University of Alberta’s eLearning management tool. Online access to course resources; students also must have lined or non-lined paper to complete assignments. Access to a Microsoft Windows-based computer may be required. A calculator is required for exercises, quizzes, and exams. Assessment includes a final exam to be completed after the last class.
