Course Description
The course provides participants with a working knowledge on the functioning of electricity markets in Alberta(from generation down to retail) and its regulatory framework. Well-functioning electricity markets are crucial to every aspect of our society, as a reliable electricity supply is essential to meet consumers' and industrial needs. Electricity generation, capacity management, electricity pricing, and delivery are inherently complex processes, which, further, must adjust for policies aiming to mitigate the effect of climate change and technological advances.

Who Should Take This Course?
The course targets employees of government agencies, industry stakeholders, and individuals looking to gain knowledge and expertise in the functioning of electricity markets - a sector with growing importance as we observe increased electrification and innovation.

Learner Outcomes
  • An understanding of how electricity markets in Alberta function (from generation down to retail) and how they relate to electricity markets in other jurisdictions.
  • A review of the Alberta electricity sector’s regulatory framework, including comparisons with similar electricity markets worldwide.
  • Familiarity with the basic economics of electricity markets, including the main economic forces determining prices and investments.
  • A discussion of electricity pricing mechanisms in Alberta and in comparable jurisdictions.
  • A discussion of the role of market power in shaping the electricity industry's outcomes and challenges.
  • An introduction to current issues driving changes in the industry. These changes include a strengthening reliance on renewable generation (wind and solar, including rooftop solar), an increasing share of electric vehicles, battery energy storage developments, and regulatory policies such as the proposed Clean Electricity Standard that aims to achieve Net-Zero emissions in the electricity sector by 2035.

The course provides individuals wishing to be employed in an electricity-related job with a working knowledge of the electricity sector’s regulatory, market, and policy foundations. The course would facilitate individuals' transition into the electricity sector and/or provide crucial knowledge to navigate career choices. The course is suitable for students (upskill) and professionals (both employed and unemployed) wanting to gain, upgrade, or diversify their energy/electricity-markets skills (reskill).

Participants can attend lectures remotely or in person. The lectures will be recorded and made available on the course website for the duration of the course.
