Course Description

This interactive seminar will help you understand and interpret construction drawings and project specifications. Acquire new skills and learn how to apply them to read, interpret, and extrapolate information from plans, elevations, sections, and details contained in construction drawings. Discuss standard CCA and CCDC documents used at various stages of pre-bid and construction. Understand the impacts of associated responsibilities, including risk management arising from bidding procedures, as well as the role of contract conditions and general requirements.

This course may be eligible for the Canada-Alberta Productivity Grant (CAPG), with final approval determined by CAPG administrators. Employers and applicants can review the CAPG guidelines and full details on the University of Alberta's Continuing Education website.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • 🗸 Recognize the role of the Project Manual in relationship to the bidding documents, construction contract documents, general requirements and the technical specifications.
  • 🗸 Utilize the contents of the Project Manual for construction administration duties.
  • 🗸 Recognize the role of MasterFormat Construction Specifications.
  • 🗸 Recognize the elements of good specification writing practice, including assessment of risk and liability associated with the documents.
  • 🗸 Identify how the performance requirements contained in the technical specification can affect the selection of products and affect work results, and recognize the effect of specification writing techniques on the outcome of the bid.
  • 🗸 Recognize the role of Division 00 and Division 01 documents on the contract and technical specifications, and how they are used in the administration of the project.
  • 🗸 List the parts of a typical construction drawing set.
  • 🗸 Identify typical drawing types, symbols, notes and scales.
  • 🗸 Recognize the common types of drawing sets and explain their differences.
  • 🗸 Extrapolate specific information from a drawing set and cross-reference it to the construction specification.
