Course Description

The responsibility of leading a team provides a leader with the opportunity to coach and mentor individual team members, as well as the team as whole. Building upon a leader or manager's performance management skills, topics may include: coaching conversations; coaching for high performance teams; and workplace mentoring and mentorship strategies and techniques.

Who Should Take This Course?

Aimed at emerging leaders, supervisors, and mid-level managers who seek to move up within their organization by improving their leadership skills.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • 🗸 Gain a broad understanding of key definitions, purposes distinctions, benefits, ethical implications, roles, and responsibilities.
  • 🗸 Identify the attributes, skills, and strategies of an effective coach/mentor.
  • 🗸 Engage in a coaching conversation: establish a relationship, elicit coachee needs, create an action plan, and a follow-up.
  • 🗸 Employ active listening strategies and ask powerful questions in both a coaching and mentoring context.

Notes
  • 🗸This is a 21-hour elective available to all NACLAA Level I students towards the certificate requirements; however, this course will not be accepted by the Society of Local Government Managers (SLGM) towards their professional designation of Certified Local Government Manager (CLGM).  Students should contact the SLGM for details on all designation requirements.
