Course Description
Understand how a worker's performance is a product of their interactions with the work environment, the equipment, and the management systems within their organization. Learn about the eight elements of the human factors spectrum and how these elements can be applied in the workplace to prevent incidents and injuries. Gain an understanding of how errors and at-risk performance can be a result of external factors such as equipment and workplace design, information transfer, and work environment, as well as physiological, psychological, and risk tolerance factors.

Learner Outcomes
By the end of this course, you should be able to: Apply Human Performance centred design principles to build organizational capacity for improved safety and operational performance. Assess workplace safety issues through the lens of human performance and provide solutions for their organization and clients. Understand the importance of the human factor when designing, changing or improving workplace equipment, processes, and systems. Understand how errors, mistakes, and lapses occur and how Human Performance principles can be applied to reduce the chances and the severity of these human traits. Learn how to observe existing design to proactively identify and mitigate error prone situations and apply an approach that puts human needs and capability first. Enable safety professionals, engineers, and decision makers to design and continuously improve facilities, equipment and work processes considering the end user perspective. Provide a thorough understanding of the relationship between Facilities/Equipment, Systems/Processes and People to improve their interaction in the workplace. Apply the principles of the Human Factors Influencing Factors Spectrum to the ‘messy’ real world, real workplaces and real workers. Offered fully online learning - synchronous format. Pre-and post-course activities may be required as part of this course. Pre-course instructions and materials will be available on eClass. The online components of this course are facilitated through eClass, the University of Alberta’s eLearning management tool.
