Course Description

Develop creative skills for the effective application of products and materials in decorating residential interiors. We will cover the function of finishes in residential interiors; applying specific materials relative to cost, durability and maintenance; awareness of the function and aesthetics of materials; applying good design elements and principles in the use of materials; interior finishes for permanent, semi- or non-permanent elements; and general understanding of window coverings, lighting and accessories related to residential interiors.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • 🗸 Be aware of various construction products (specifically those related to the interior design of a building) & the materials used in their manufacture.
  • 🗸 Understand how the products & finishes chosen during the design stage of building construction affect the useability & overall feel of the finished space.
  • 🗸 Be cognizant of criteria in selecting fabrics and finishes, application, and durability.
  • 🗸 Have a basic understanding of the math required to calculate product amounts Appreciate the function of finishes in residential interiors Apply materials, durability, and cost.

  • 🗸 This is a Synchronous online course accessible through CE Canvas, the University of Alberta’s eLearning management tool.
  • 🗸 Students will require a computer with audio input and output (such as a microphone-equipped headset).
  • 🗸 This is a graded course; assessment activities may include exams, projects, presentations, journals, or research papers. 
  • 🗸 Learning materials are provided through CE Canvas at no additional cost.
  • 🗸 EXRI 4680 Products & Finishes is a 39-hour course.  It is one of six core courses required for the Residential Interiors Certificate.
