EXSCMA 5635 - SMT Operations Management
Course Description
This course will familiarize Participants with operations in manufacturing, distribution and services organizations. They will learn the basics of location selection and layout. Among topics covered are capacity planning and scheduling, as well as the key concepts of JIT/Lean, OPT/TOC and MRP. Participants will discuss the challenges of balancing capacity with demand and be introduced to forecasting techniques, demand planning and inventory ordering. Quality systems and continuous improvement methodologies, including Deming, Juran, ISO 9000 and Six Sigma, will also be addressed.
This course may be eligible for the Canada-Alberta Productivity Grant (CAPG), with final approval determined by CAPG administrators. Employers and applicants can review the CAPG guidelines and full details on the University of Alberta’s Continuing Education website.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
- 🗸 Explain operations management responsibilities in the organization and within their respective value/supply chains.
- 🗸 Describe quality and outline the various quality management programs.
- 🗸 Describe the importance of a forecast and its process.
- 🗸 Understand how the forecast results are managed within the organization by varying inventory levels and by amending AP, MPS, MRP and scheduling for both goods and services.
- 🗸 Understand resource management and operations scheduling in the context of the participant’s organization.
