EXCPE 4285 - Environmental Site Assessment and Management
Course Description
Introduction to the three phase approach for the management of contaminated sites in Alberta. Phase 1 and Phase 2 Environmental Site Assessment will be covered in detail. Risk Management Plan and remediation will also be reviewed. Alberta Site Assessment standards and the Alberta Tier 1 and 2 soil and Groundwater Remediation Guidelines will be utilized. Additional topics will include the applicability of risk management and/or site remediation to various sites. Case studies will be used to provide focus on contamination sources, characterization, transportation, and fate in the environment.Who Should Take This Course?
Aimed at individuals transitioning into the environmental field, as well as mid-level professionals in sectors involving environmental aspects, this course will also be of value to agrologists, biologists, engineers, industrial managers, foresters, technologists, and others who wish to update their skills and knowledge in this area.Learner Outcomes
By the end of this course, students should be able to: Understand the process for the assessment and management of contaminated sites; Differentiate between phases of the Environmental Site Assessment (Phase 1 Environmental Site Assessment, Phase 2 Environmental Site Assessment, and Site Remediation and Risk Management Plan); Understand Alberta's regulatory framework for contaminated sites; Plan and conduct components of the environmental site assessment such as a) identifying contaminants' sources, characterization, transportation, and fate in the Environment Alberta Site Assessment Standards and Alberta Tier 1 and 2 Soil and Groundwater Remediation Guidelines, b) understanding and demonstrating how to perform data collection, interpretation, and analysis, c) understanding land use and buffer zones with remediation, and d) identifying and applying a Remediation Action Plan (RAP)/Remediation Certificate.Notes
This class has online synchronous lectures. Students will require a computer with both audio input and output (such as a microphone-equipped headset). Lecture-based, with group work and case study review.
Recognized by the Alberta Institute of Agrologists (AIA) as a senior agrology course related to entrance into the profession and to augment core knowledge requirements related to a practice area.
