Diploma Description

Canada’s municipalities are facing growing demands for sustainable growth, housing supply, and climate-resilient communities. However, in 2024, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities highlights in its Municipal Growth Framework that local governments face capacity limitations in land-use planning. This diploma program is designed to help address those gaps by equipping professionals with the knowledge and tools needed to accelerate municipal and community planning practices.

Through this program, you will learn the importance of engaging and consulting with citizens while gaining practical tools to do so effectively. You will explore the process of municipal planning with a focus on land use and development, and apply community planning strategies to modern issues such as new urbanism, business revitalization, transportation planning, and urban sprawl. You will also examine land use bylaws and legal considerations that directly impact planning and development.

Designation Pathway

For regulated members (Candidate and RPP members) of the Alberta Professional Planners Institute (APPI), the learning acquired during completion of courses in this program is eligible to be self-logged as structured learning for the purposes of compliance with the Institute’s mandatory Continuous Professional Learning (CPL) Program.

  • Earn a digital badge for each course, a digital certificate for completing a program, and stack certificates to work toward a diploma.

 

Program Details +
  • It’s designed for part-time study and can generally be completed within one to two years.
  • You have the flexibility to schedule courses around your availability. Most students complete 1–2 courses per semester.
  • If you’re new to Applied Land Use Planning, it’s recommended to complete EXLUP 8215 Community Planning Process first, but courses can be completed in any order.
  • Courses are graded through assessments, which may include quizzes, class participation, exams, discussion forums, papers, and presentations.
  • It’s a flexible online experience, with courses offered asynchronously and/or bichronously. More info about online delivery formats can be found here.
  • Course materials are shared in ConEd Canvas. Some courses may require additional resources, such as textbooks.

  • Please note that continuing education classes are not eligible for student loans.

Cost +
  • Approximate cost of the full program: $7,455 CAD

Stacking Credentials and Transferability +
  • To earn this diploma, students must complete all required certificates in the program pathway. Please visit the program map for more information.

International Students +
  • International Students are welcome to enroll and pay the same course fees as local students.
  • Proficiency in English and a stable internet connection are needed to participate and succeed in our courses.
