Program Description

As Canada’s healthcare system responds to growing workforce needs, internationally educated pharmacy graduates (IEPGs) bring valuable expertise and experience that can help strengthen pharmacy services and patient care. The University of Alberta’s Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Alberta College of Pharmacy (ACP) have partnered to create a pathway that helps these professionals prepare for pharmacy practice in Alberta and across Canada.

The Diploma in Canadian Pharmacy Practice (DCPP) is a comprehensive bridging program that builds on the education and experience of internationally educated pharmacist graduates (IEPGs), helping them develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed for pharmacy practice in Alberta or elsewhere in Canada. Graduates will be prepared to deliver safe, high-quality, person-centred care within Alberta’s evolving healthcare system and diverse communities and settings across Canada.

Who Will Benefit?

This program is designed for the following individuals:

  • 🗸Internationally educated pharmacy graduates (IEPGs) who are interested in practising pharmacy in Alberta or elsewhere in Canada.
  • 🗸Pharmacists seeking professional development to strengthen their clinical skills in person-centred care and expand their knowledge of pharmacy practice and operations in Canada.
  • 🗸Learners pursuing a pathway to the Diploma in Canadian Pharmacy Practice (DCPP) who wish to ladder eligible standalone micro-courses from the Certificate in Canadian Pharmacy Fundamentals toward the diploma. The DCPP satisfies an eligibility pathway for registration on the Alberta College of Pharmacy’s provisional pharmacist register.

Diploma Pathway
  • Earn a digital badge for each course, a digital certificate for completing a program, and stack certificates to work toward a diploma.
  • Upon completing the program, DCPF program graduates will obtain a recognized, official diploma from the University of Alberta.
  • Completion of the DCPP program is also an option for IEPGs to obtain eligibility for the provisional pharmacist register in Alberta.

 

Program Details +
  • DCPP offers a flexible online learning experience with six foundational micro-courses, three pharmacotherapy courses, two skills courses, an integrated capping course and a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on Indigenous Canada.
  • Foundational and pharmacotherapy courses are offered in a self-paced online format.
  • Patient Care Skills and Integrated Capping courses use a hybrid model from January to June each year, with mandatory in-person classes held in May and June.
  • Grading is completed through assessments such as quizzes, exams, and presentations.
  • To obtain the Diploma, all 12 courses and EXPH 2572 Indigenous Canada - Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) must be completed within a five-year period.
Eligibility Requirements +

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Have a pharmacy degree and provide a transcript confirming the degree was granted.
  • Provide one of the following:
    • A pharmacist licence in good standing in a Canadian province or territory; or
    • Proof of successful completion of the PEBC Document Evaluation process.
  • Applicants must also meet the English Language Proficiency requirement set by the University of Alberta, unless an exemption applies.
Cost +
  • Approximate cost of the program: $13,950 CAD.
  • Flexible payment options: register and pay for all courses at once or pay course-by-course as you go.
  • Cours­es are GST-exempt.
  • Learners gain access to the university library system, but no textbook purchases are required. All materials are shared with students through the university’s online learning management system.
Stacking Credentials and Transferability +
  • The Certificate in Canadian Pharmacy Fundamentals can “ladder” into the Diploma in Canadian Pharmacy Practice (DCPP) program, reducing the course load within the DCPP program after admission.
  • Transfer credit from other institutions is not available for this program.
International Students +
  • International Students are welcome to enroll and pay the same course fees as local students.
  • Proficiency in English and a stable internet connection are needed to participate and succeed in our courses.
  • Please note that non-credit programming does not qualify for a study permit, therefore, this program cannot be used for immigration to Canada. For more information, please contact University of Alberta International Student Services.
