Course Description

Aimed at individuals who are currently working in positions with greater responsibilities within the local government field, as well as those working toward their Certified Local Government Manager designation.

This course may be eligible for the Canada-Alberta Productivity Grant (CAPG), with final approval determined by CAPG administrators. Employers and applicants can review the CAPG guidelines and full details on the University of Albertaโ€™s Continuing Education website.

Who Should Take This Course?

Aimed at individuals interested in moving into higher level responsibilities in the local government field; our student body includes municipal government employees in planning, corporate services, economic development, operations, finance, and more..

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • ๐Ÿ—ธ Understand the central considerations for the concept of citizen engagement and consultation and its connection to deliberative democracy and representative government.
  • ๐Ÿ—ธ Explain the value of citizen engagement in the development of public policy and the implications of not doing so in contemporary public management.
  • ๐Ÿ—ธ Discern the challenges associated with building a sustainable approach to citizen consultation.
  • ๐Ÿ—ธ Identify the concept of community empowerment and its value in building sustainable communities.
  • ๐Ÿ—ธ Identify the various models and consultative designs of participation and understand the use and application of each.
  • ๐Ÿ—ธ Discuss the importance of evaluating engagement and the different ways this can be accomplished.
  • ๐Ÿ—ธ Understand the ways in which e-democracy in general and technology in particular can meaningfully support citizen engagement.
  • ๐Ÿ—ธ Understand effective engagement design techniques, including goal identification, timing, stakeholder identification, communication tools, activity design, evaluation, and follow-up.
