Course Description

Develop basic skills in drawing, drafting, and presentation relevant to the field of interior decorating. This intensive course includes hands-on application of theory. Learn basic line-drawing and modeled-drawing techniques, basic drafting tools and techniques, three-dimensional subjects and translation of these into two-dimensional images, as well as presentation techniques for portfolios and client proposals.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • 🗸 Apply light, shade and shadow in drawings.
  • 🗸 Employ basic steps to create a ‘plan drawing’.
  • 🗸 Create orthographic projections (elevation and axonometric drawings) for use in interior design and decorating projects.
  • 🗸 Respect and appreciate the technical skills required to become competent in the field of interior design—(manual) drafting, visual presentation, and 3-D rendering techniques.
  • 🗸 Assemble color and story boards to convey concepts and ideas.

  • 🗸 This is a Synchronous online course accessible through CE Canvas, the University of Alberta’s eLearning management tool.
  • 🗸 Students will require a computer with audio input and output (such as a microphone-equipped headset).
  • 🗸 This is a graded course; assessment activities may include exams, projects, presentations, journals, or research papers. 
  • 🗸 A text is required for this course. Additional learning materials are provided through CE Canvas at no additional cost.
  • 🗸 Additional supplies are required for this course. This Supply List is subject to change.  
  • 🗸 EXRI 4677 Basic Drawing Drafting & Presentation is a 39-hour course.  It is one of six core courses required for the Residential Interiors Certificate.
