Course Description
Apply your space planning skills and knowledge in this hands-on course that builds on basic research techniques and fundamental theories of residential interior decorating. Learn application of client needs assessment research and problem solving techniques; human/spatial considerations in design; schematics and preliminary planning; design concepts of furniture grouping considerations; functional layouts for individual rooms, room groupings and storage areas; and basic residential structural, mechanical and electrical systems diagrams.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
- 🗸 Assess Clients’ needs and determine project scope.
- 🗸 Discuss the design process and application of the concepts of circulation analyzation and furniture scale for residential interiors and their importance to successful planning solutions.
- 🗸 Discuss the theory of general furniture considerations as it applies to residential space planning of living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, storage areas, etc. in standard homes as well as trending alternatives.
- 🗸 Discuss the application of sociological, psychological, and the physical space needs as well as territoriality, ergonomics, and anthropometrics and their influence on design.
- 🗸 Apply information and research to planning the main areas of a residence including living room, dining room, kitchen, bathrooms,bedrooms and support spaces.
- 🗸 Apply the theories and identify industry standards with particular emphasis on kitchen and bathroom planning.
- 🗸 Recognize and identify the common symbols used in basic mechanical, structural and electrical systems diagrams.

- 🗸 Students will require a computer with audio input and output (such as a microphone-equipped headset).
