Course Description

Cad II is an extension of the lessons learned in CAD I. This project based credit course will focus on developing more advanced skills in generating two-dimensional drawings and three dimensional models, still primarily based in Google SketchUp. Students will develop a greater awareness of presentation skills using the software's built in animation features and creating working/presentation drawings with Google LayOut.

This course may be eligible for the Canada-Alberta Productivity Grant (CAPG), with final approval determined by CAPG administrators. Employers and applicants can review the CAPG guidelines and full details on the University of Alberta’s Continuing Education website.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • 🗸 Develop a strong foundation in the basics of 3D modeling using SketchUp tools to improve efficiency and accuracy.
  • 🗸 Customize commands, toolbars, and shortcuts in SketchUp to streamline your workflow and improve productivity.
  • 🗸 Use templates and organize your SketchUp models using groups, components, tags, and scenes to save time and maintain consistency in your projects.
  • 🗸 Explore online resources and extensions that can expand the functionality of SketchUp and enhance your modeling skills.
  • 🗸 Utilize advanced 3D rendering techniques with V-Ray to create professional-grade visualizations of your designs.
  • 🗸 Gain proficiency in SketchUp LayOut to create professional 2D layouts of your existing 3D models using SketchUp.
  • 🗸 Create a professional communication package using SketchUp and LayOut, including 3D models, textures, renderings, and 2D layouts

Notes
  • 🗸 Fully online synchronous course, accessible through CE Canvas, the University of Alberta's eLearning management tool.
  • 🗸 Students are required to have a laptop or desktop computer for this course.  Audio input and output (such as a microphone-equipped headset) is also required. 
  • 🗸 Software is required for this course.
  • 🗸EXRI 4699 Computer-Assisted Design II is a 39-hour course. It is an elective for the Residential Interiors Certificate.
