EXKSR 6402 - Access, Community, and Belonging in Sport and Recreation
Course Description
This course explores how sport and recreation organizations can foster inclusive environments through access, community-building, and belonging. Topics include systemic barriers, intersectionality, inclusive leadership, universal design, and equity-driven policy. Through case studies and applied frameworks, students will examine how to move beyond representation toward meaningful inclusion, with emphasis on community co-creation, storytelling, and organizational change.

- 🗸 Explain the principles of Access, Community, and Belonging (ACB) and how they differ from traditional diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) approaches in sport and recreation.
- 🗸 Identify systemic barriers to participation and apply intersectional and lived experience frameworks to better understand exclusion in sport and recreation contexts.
- 🗸 Apply key legal, ethical, and design principles, including the duty to accommodate and universal design, to support inclusive environments.
- 🗸 Design inclusive programs and spaces that address financial, cultural, physical, and digital barriers to access.
- 🗸 Evaluate organizational practices related to leadership, hiring, and communication through an ACB lens.
- 🗸 Implement strategies that move beyond representation to foster authentic belonging, community co-creation, and sustainable organizational change.
