Course Description

This course will focus on the general interdisciplinary and specific physical therapy management of patients with vestibular conditions and post-concussion. The first half of the course will cover posterior canalithiasis and less common variants of BPPV, specific causes of unilateral peripheral hypofunction, cervicogenic dizziness, and migraine-associated vertigo. The second half of the course will focus on immediate management of concussion and assessment and treatment of post-concussive disorder, including visual-vestibular integration.

This course is designed for Physical therapists, Chiropractors, Physicians, Kinesiologists, Athletic Therapists, and other health professionals interested in this content area.

Learning Objectives

By the end the course, students will be able to:

  • 🗸 Competently identify various vestibular pathology including benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), unilateral and bilateral peripheral hypofunction, central vertigo, non-otologic vertigo, and post-concussion syndrome.
  • 🗸 Summarize the medical and rehabilitation management of the vestibular pathology listed above.
  • 🗸 Analyze the findings of BPPV positional testing to diagnose the different variants.
  • 🗸 Develop an appropriate plan of care to treat peripheral and central vestibular hypofunction.
  • 🗸 Assess for and recognize common patterns of symptoms post-concussion.
  • 🗸 Recognize the need for interdisciplinary management of patients with persistent concussive symptoms and the role of different health care providers.
  • 🗸 Develop an appropriate interdisciplinary plan of care in the management of concussion and post-concussive disorder.
