Course Description
This course is an introduction to primary management strategies for rehabilitation professionals working with aging populations. Physical and psychosocial issues associated with aging will be discussed, as will strategies for promoting wellness and independent living.
Learners will explore normal and accelerated aging changes, identify common geriatric conditions, differentiate between delirium, dementia, and depression, and utilize evidence-based guidelines and technology to foster safe, independent living for all seniors.
Who Should Take This Course?
This course is designed for Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physicians, Nurses, Kinesiologists, Recreational Therapists, and other healthcare professionals.
Learning Objectives
By the end the course, students will be able to:
- 🗸 Differentiate between expected and accelerated changes in the human body with aging.
- 🗸 Utilize a primary care screen to help triage and assess for issues commonly affecting community-dwelling elderly.
- 🗸 Differentiate between delirium, dementia, and depression in older adults in pathology and management.
- 🗸 Identify and address socioeconomic determinants of healthy aging.
- 🗸 Educate individuals on clinical practice guidelines for healthy aging for physical activity, nutritional intake, and maintaining or improving cognitive and mental health.
- 🗸 Provide information and cite evidence behind the use of various technologies to support healthy aging and aging in place.
- 🗸 Provide recommendations for independent living with age and functional performance measures that can be used in practice.
