EXFRM 2717 - Spinal Cord Injury Management
Course Description
This course introduces rehabilitation and healthcare professionals to the management and treatment of individuals with spinal cord injuries. Participants will learn how to assess and classify spinal cord injuries, identify key impairments, and create care plans for managing common chronic conditions. The course also covers strategies for functional training and explores current practice guidelines and adaptive technologies used in spinal cord injury care.

Learning Objectives
By the end the course, students will be able to:
- 🗸 Describe impairments and associated functional prognosis in patients with various levels of spinal cord injury.
- 🗸 Demonstrate understanding of the rehabilitation assessment of patients with spinal cord injury in acute care and subacute care settings.
- 🗸 Demonstrate understanding of the rehabilitation strategies, education, and training of patients with various levels of spinal cord injury.
- 🗸 Assess, prevent, and manage associated conditions such as neurogenic pain, neurogenic bowel and bladder, osteoporosis, shoulder pain, sexual dysfunction, spasticity, pressure ulcers, autonomic dysfunction, cardiovascular and metabolic dysfunction, and heterotopic ossification.
- 🗸 Understand the availability and appropriate use of assistive and adaptive technology for patients with spinal cord injury to support rehabilitation of ambulation, wheelchair mobility, activities of daily living, etc.
- 🗸 Detail the current evidence on the use of advanced technology in SCI management, including virtual reality, functional electrical stimulation, stem cell implantation, exoskeletons, spinal cord implants, and brain-computer interfaces.
