Course Description

This course introduces learners to the Canadian health care and legal systems, including the laws, regulations and standards related to pharmacy practice. Learners will explore Treaty obligations in Canadian healthcare, discover Canadian public health strategies, and develop awareness of the broad scope of practice for pharmacists in Alberta.

Who Should Take This Course?

The course is designed for:

  • 🗸Internationally educated pharmacist graduates (IEPGs) who are planning to become a clinical pharmacist in Alberta or elsewhere in Canada.
  • 🗸Individuals, including IEPGs, seeking a foundational knowledge of the Canadian healthcare and legal systems related to pharmacy practice, including aspects of Indigenous cultural safety and public health.
  • 🗸Out-of-province pharmacists relocating to Alberta seeking a foundational knowledge of the Alberta scope of practice.
  • 🗸Licensed pharmacists looking for continuing professional development and/or to refresh their knowledge of the Canadian health care system, laws, regulations, and practice standards.

  • 🗸 Prepare for practice in accordance with laws and regulatory requirements for pharmacists in Alberta.
  • 🗸 Explore the pharmacist's scope of practice in Alberta and the provision of patient-centred care.
  • 🗸 Describe the connection between government practices towards Indigenous peoples and resultant health outcomes.
  • 🗸 Prepare for culturally safe care to Indigenous peoples in Canada.
  • 🗸 Describe public health, health promotion, and disease prevention in Canada.
