Course Description

This course will engage learners in accessing pharmacy resources, applying drug informatics, and integrating evidence into clinical decision-making. Learners will be introduced to research study design, critical appraisal, communication of numeracy and how evidence-based medicine can impact Indigenous health.

Who Should Take This Course?

The course is designed for:

  • 🗸Internationally educated pharmacist graduates (IEPGs) who are planning to become a clinical pharmacist in Alberta or elsewhere in Canada.
  • 🗸Practicing pharmacists, including IEPGs, who are keen to improve skills related to drug informatics, critical appraisal and integration of evidence into practice.
  • 🗸Healthcare professionals, leaders, and medication-related policy stakeholders looking to refine critical appraisal skills for clinical trials or systematic reviews or explore the intersection of Evidence-Based Practice and Indigenous health in Canada.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • 🗸 Describe the principles of evidence-based practice and the hierarchy of evidence.
  • 🗸 Respond to drug information questions using a systematic approach and resources common to Canadian pharmacy practice.
  • 🗸 Evaluate the methodology and findings of clinical trials, systematic reviews and clinical practice guidelines.
  • 🗸 Explore differences between Indigenous and Western worldviews in the context of evidence-based-medicine.
  • 🗸 Integrate numeracy into patient-centered care and shared decision-making.
