Course Description

This course introduces learners to the expectations of pharmacists within pharmacy systems in Canada and Alberta. Learners will discuss the medication use process, prescription requirements, drug scheduling, and the importance of patient safety and privacy.

Who Should Take This Course?

The course is designed for:

  • 🗸Internationally educated pharmacist graduates (IEPGs) who are planning to become a clinical pharmacist in Alberta or elsewhere in Canada.
  • 🗸Individuals, including IEPGs, interested in foundational knowledge of Canadian drug scheduling, prescription dispensing and pricing in Alberta and best practices for patient privacy and safety.
  • 🗸Healthcare professionals and policy stakeholders who are keen to learn more about pharmacy operations and systems in Alberta.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • 🗸 Describe the medication use process.
  • 🗸 Be prepared to receive, dispense and/or transfer a prescription within Alberta.
  • 🗸 Outline the pharmacist's scope of practice in prescribing and adapting in Alberta.
  • 🗸 Discuss federal and provincial drug scheduling.
  • 🗸 Describe prescription pricing in Alberta, including the role of medication insurance and the NIHB program.
  • 🗸 Describe best practices related to patient safety and medication error management.
  • 🗸 Demonstrate respect for patient privacy and confidentiality.
