Course Description

This course establishes the foundation of clinical pharmacy practice through the patient care process to collect data, assess drug therapy needs, plan care and reassess the patient. Learners will also be introduced to clinical documentation.

Who Should Take This Course?

The course is designed for:

  • 🗸Internationally educated pharmacist graduates (IEPGs) planning to become clinical pharmacists in Alberta or elsewhere in Canada.
  • 🗸IEPGs interested in clinical pharmacy practice in Canada.
  • 🗸Licensed pharmacists looking to refine their clinical skills for gathering patient data, assessment, planning care, communication and documentation, including frameworks such as IESA, SCHOLAR-E, and DAP.
  • 🗸Healthcare leaders and policy stakeholders looking to better understand the pharmacist’s step-by-step process for patient assessment and provision of care.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • 🗸 Gather patient data using effective communication and standardized frameworks.
  • 🗸 Be prepared to conduct a patient assessment to identify and prioritize drug therapy problems (DTPs).
  • 🗸 Outline goals of therapy and discuss therapeutic alternatives.
  • 🗸 Identify a course of action to address DTPs that aligns with the scope of practice for pharmacists in Alberta.
  • 🗸 Create a monitoring plan that includes parameters for drug therapy effectiveness and safety, and enables appropriate follow-up.
  • 🗸 Clearly and concisely document clinical activities to maintain professional standards and facilitate continuity of care.
