EXPH 2568 - Pharmacotherapy 3 - Expanded Topics in Pharmacotherapy

This course allows learners to expand their knowledge and skills in order to provide care to various patient populations in pharmacy practice. Learners will apply the patient care process framework, critical thinking, and principles of evidence-based therapeutic decision-making in a variety of expanded pharmacotherapy topics such as special populations, sexual health, pain management, and substance use disorder.

The course is designed for:

• 🗸Pharmacists licensed in Canada who want to expand their pharmacotherapy knowledge to support full-scope practice in pediatric patients, geriatric patients, or adults with chronic pain, substance use disorder, cancer, and sexual health.
• 🗸Internationally educated pharmacy graduates (IEPGs) who have completed the prerequisite courses and are planning to become clinical pharmacists in Alberta or elsewhere in Canada.
• 🗸International pharmacists who have completed the prerequisite courses and want to strengthen and apply their pharmacotherapy knowledge to clinical scenarios relevant to Canadian pharmacy practice.

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

• 🗸 Describe the risk factors, clinical presentation, and assessment parameters to identify and prioritize drug-therapy problems.
• 🗸 Identify red flags and refer when appropriate.
• 🗸 Support and facilitate patients’ goals of therapy.
• 🗸 Evaluate the non-pharmacologic and/or pharmacologic therapeutic alternatives.
• 🗸 Develop a management plan, taking into consideration patient factors, efficacy, safety, and adherence.
• 🗸 Develop a monitoring plan that evaluates progress toward therapeutic goals and safety concerns.
• 🗸 Respect the health needs of diverse populations.

For pharmacists already licensed in Canada, completion of EXPH 2567 Pharmacotherapy 2 is a mandatory prerequisite. Other recommended prerequisites include:

• 🗸EXPH 2564 Patient Care Process for Pharmacy Practice (recommended).
• 🗸EXPH 2561 Drug Informatics and Evidence-Based Practice in Pharmacy (recommended).

For non-licensed Internationally Educated Pharmacist Graduates (IEPGs) completion of EXPH 2567 Pharmacotherapy 2 is a mandatory prerequisite.
