Course Description
This course engages learners in patient education, the patient care process and the medication use process. Skill development will include assessing prescription authenticity and appropriateness, prescription processing, preparation and dispensing, communication, accessing patient health information, drug information and documentation.
Who Should Take This Course?
The course is designed for:
- 🗸Exclusive use by learners enrolled in the full Diploma in Canadian Pharmacy Practice (DCPP) program.
- 🗸Internationally educated pharmacy graduates (IEPGs) who have completed course prerequisites and are planning to become a clinical pharmacist in Alberta or elsewhere in Canada.
- 🗸Pharmacists who have completed the prerequisites and are keen to enhance and apply pharmacy operational and patient care skills in scenarios realistic to Canadian practice.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
- 🗸 Apply scope of practice, legal and ethical frameworks and best practices when fulfilling medication therapy requests.
- 🗸 Apply the patient care process to gather and document patient information, assess and process prescriptions, identify drug therapy problems, engage in clinical decision-making, and provide patient-centred care and monitoring.
- 🗸 Select appropriate drug information resources and integrate best available evidence into clinical decisions.
- 🗸 Demonstrate responsive communication with patients, health care providers and pharmacy colleagues, including counselling for self-limiting acute conditions.
